Clay work – ceramic studio classes Kent

Everyone is talking about it. Pottery.  Watching it on TV and social media is full of luscious pages of beautiful ceramics. So many want to get involved with this wonderful craft but it is often difficult to find a way to join in for a taster session without signing up for many weeks of classes. Hopefully Simple Ceramics can bridge that gap with these various day workshops at your convenience.

Stonehay studio is a charming space for inspiring and creative work. Adapted from an eighteenth century cow barn, the workshop has everything you need for a great day’s learning how to make your very own pottery vessels. From bowls to plates, nothing should stop your ideas from flowing! Bee will be there every step of the way, giving your advise and direction. After the class there will be time for cleaning up and facilities are available next door in the house and coffee and tea are always there to power you up!

  • Half day – A typical 4hr workshop will begin with discussing the different methods of making pottery vessels and how clay works. We’ll then move on to the many ways of hand-building pots and the many ways of decorating the finished pot. Then it’s over to you and you’ll be helped to achieve all the designs you’ve discussed at the beginning.  Time will be allowed for cleaning up and discussing work. All pieces to be kept will be fired and you can either collect later or continue to work with them in a subsequent class. If you decide to book another class, you will be able to continue with decorating your work and glazing prior to second firing.
  • Full day – A typical full day workshop (7hrs) is a step up from the half day version and you’ll be able to concentrate on learning the basics of throwing pots on the wheel. This will involve understanding the techniques necessary to preparing the clay prior to throwing, centring the clay on the wheel and creating a cylinder which is the basis of many different shapes in clay. Time will be allowed for cleaning up and discussing work. All pieces to be kept will be fired and you can either collect later or continue to work with them in a subsequent class. If you decide to book another class, you will be able to continue with decorating your work and glazing prior to second firing.
  • 3 week course – If you’re interested in really gaining an understanding of wheel thrown pottery and would like to spend more time decorating and preparing your pots between firings then maybe a 3 week course is for you. With 21 hrs studio time in total you can really get a grounding in most of the skills required.
  • All materials, including clay/glazes/slip and tools provided but students must bring aprons or overalls.
  • Coffee, tea and soft drinks will be available for the entire workshop and lunch will be provided on the day classes.
  • Contact Bee before booking to discuss dates that will suit you and then make the booking!
  • Once your date and time are confirmed and paid, then you’ll receive full address and workshop details ahead of the day.
